Securing the Future of Ferrini

Luxury buildings can’t compare to the long-lasting benefits of preserving Ferrini Ranch. Tucked between Ford Ord National Monument and Toro Regional Park along Highway 68, sits a cornerstone property for the future of central California’s climate and wildfire resilience, as well as vital habitat for the regions’ plants and wildlife.

Once slated for 185 luxury houses, the proposed development would have drawn from an already overburdened aquifer, impeded a critical wildlife corridor, and faced high wildfire risks. Now, Trust for Public Land, Big Sur Land Trust, and the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County are teaming up to permanently protect this irreplaceable landscape, ensuring its value extends far beyond just what could be built on top of it. Now that we have an opportunity to protect this important landscape, it’s going to take the help of donors like you to make it happen.

If successful, safeguarding Ferrini Ranch would connect and expand over 20,000 acres of protected natural areas, enhancing a critical wildlife corridor, protecting iconic views at the gateway of the Monterey Peninsula, while reducing wildfire risks and safeguarding the region’s natural and cultural heritage. TPL, BSLT and other partners are collaborating to close the remaining fundraising gap needed to finalize the property’s protection.

The preservation of Ferrini Ranch is an investment in the vital natural resources and waters that sustain the region’s economic, social, and ecological health. And for those who care about critters large and small, Ferrini is home to species like the mountain lion, American badger, California red-legged frog, and California tiger salamander. Spanning both sides of a busy highway, this land provides access to a critical underpass, creating the only safe route for wildlife movement in the area.

If fundraising efforts are successful, the land will be transferred into the ownership of Big Sur Land Trust, to protect and enhance the scenic open space for future generations.
