Kahn Property/Tongass National Forest
Accessible only by boat or float plane, this magnificent island in southeast Alaska is a favorite destination for fishers, hunters, hikers and campers. The property is also an important habitat for numerous species of wildlife, including bald eagles, brown bear and Sitka black-tailed deer. In 2001, TPL worked with the Nature Conservancy of Alaska, the Goldman Foundation and the United States Forest Service to acquire 156 acres of former mining sites for permanent conservation and then donated them to the Tongass National Forest. TPL also facilitated the clean-up efforts of the abandoned mining operations and transferred the lease of an associated pier to the nearby town of Pelican for use as a public landing point.
