Ontonagon River

Rolling hills, majestic hardwood forests, pristine lakes, and streams—this is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and a beloved recreational destination for many Midwesterners. Anglers find peace among the gleaming brooks as they cast their lures for trout and campers share stories around a cozy campfire as they stargaze without the hindrance of city lights. For decades, Trust for Public Land has been working to continue these unforgettable experiences for visitors by protecting land around the U.P. and throughout the iconic Northwoods.

We’ve already protected nearly 42,000 acres that have been added to the Ottawa National Forest, and now, we’ve protected another 1,247 acres along the pristine West Branch of the Ontonagon River, known as the Wild and Scenic Ontonagon. The area has been designated by the federal government as a Wild and Scenic River because of its beauty and environmental significance, including habitat for the gray wolf, Canadian lynx, and the bald eagle. As the perfect spot to enjoy the outdoors, the land includes shoreline along Victoria Lake and a popular segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail, a 4,800-mile hiking trail that passes through eight states—from Vermont to North Dakota.
