The Secret Is in the Soil

Stepping foot onto Richards Ranch, visitors get a sense that there’s promise for a healthier planet and healthier people, right under their boots. Stewarded by the Richards family since 1941, the ranch has been a testament to resilient agriculture and stewardship across five generations. Through implementing and educating people about regenerative agriculture practices, the ranch builds sustainable food systems that provide health benefits to consumers and the planet alike.

Trust for Public Land is working to permanently protect 5,364 acres here, to preserve the legacy of sustainable ranching and give the public a way to experience deep connection to the land.

By protecting Richards Ranch, we’re protecting the heritage of thoughtful land care that restores habitats, strengthens soils, and keeps the watershed clean. This land, once at risk of sprawling real estate development, will remain a vital wildlife corridor and carbon capturing landscape for generations to come. The ranch bridges a gap along the Yuba River, creating a vast protected landscape of nearly 18,000 acres of public land where wildlife can roam freely, and people can connect with a landscape that holds history, inspiration, and promise.

Limited and thoughtful development at Richards Ranch will support public access for hiking, small-scale camping, and workshops in regenerative agriculture. This unique combination of agricultural heritage, wildlife protection, and educational access, ensures that the landscape remains an enduring resource for all—a place where each visit reinforces our bond with nature and deepens our commitment to its future.
