TAKE ACTION: Honor Black Wall Street

You can help to honor Black Wall Street.

The Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was once a thriving hub of Black businesses and homes.

On May 31, 1921, this vibrant community was devastated by a violent white mob, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and the displacement of thousands of people. This tragic event obliterated what was the wealthiest Black community in America, with effects that have reverberated through generations.

The time is past due to honor Black Wall Street as a national monument. This recognition is essential to celebrate Black excellence and entrepreneurship and to confront and acknowledge the enduring racism in our country.

In addition, less than a quarter of our national parks and monuments represent historically marginalized and underrepresented communities. Together, we can change this.

Please urge President Biden to designate Black Wall Street as a national monument today. Let’s ensure this history is preserved for future generations and remains a powerful testament to resilience and strength.

Thank you for your commitment to honoring this critical piece of our history.

Letter to President Biden

RE: Honor Black Wall Street

To President Biden,

The tragic events that transpired in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 31, 1921, represent one of the most devastating chapters in our nation’s history. The massacre obliterated a thriving community and left scars that have impacted generations of Black Americans in Oklahoma and across the country.

In honoring our nation’s legacy, it’s imperative that we include all stories, especially those that have been marginalized or forgotten. Therefore, I urge you to use the Antiquities Act to designate Black Wall Street as a national monument.

This designation will be a powerful testament to Black excellence, resilience, and entrepreneurialism. It will also serve as a solemn reminder of the deep-seated racism that fueled the destruction of Greenwood and continues to plague our society today.

It is well past time to preserve and commemorate this crucial piece of American history. By declaring Black Wall Street a national monument, you can help ensure its story is told, lessons are learned, and its legacy is honored for generations.

Sincerely,
