In movies, the Los Angeles of the future is a rough town: if it’s not burning up in the aftermath of the Big One, it’s slipping into the ocean or being invaded by extraterrestrials. But that’s the big screen. In reality, we think the city of tomorrow can be a greener, healthier, and happier place to live—by making use of a resource that’s hidden in plain sight.
Even in the densest parts of the city, there’s room for green space if you know where to look. In Los Angeles, nearly 900 miles of alleyways—today often unused, polluted, and unsafe—are ripe for transformation. In our city of the future, “green alleys” will combine public art with natural landscaping like fruit trees and permeable pavement, making neighborhoods more walkable and beautiful while helping manage stormwater runoff.
Like the idea? Vote for it! The LA2050 initiative is offering support to the best ideas for a greener Los Angeles— and our Avalon Green Alley Demonstration Project is in the running.
