Codding Hollow

The Long Trail—the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States—runs for 272 miles along the crest of the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to Canada. After a nearly 30-year wait, we preserved one of the trail’s last unprotected sections, the 167-acre Codding Hollow property in Johnson and Waterville, Vermont.

The Long Trail is not only a great place for Vermonters to enjoy the outdoors, it’s also a historical landmark attracting visitors from across the country and inspiring thru-hikers around the world. On average, about 200,000 hikers traverse the Long Trail annually, with visitor counts that rise each year. In partnership with the Green Mountain Club and State of Vermont, we protected the Codding Hollow trail section from development, permanently protecting one of Vermont’s most important assets.
