Chicago Trails and Greenways
For the past two years, The Trust for Public Land in Chicago has been working with Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood to help advance their green and open space goals that were articulated in their 2018 Quality of Life Plan. Under the Grid is one project that advances these goals. This project seeks to transform 1.5 miles of vacant land under the Chicago Transit Authority’s Pink Line to a vibrant, art-filled greenway that connects commuters, pedestrians, and residents to neighborhood amenities. In February of 2020, over 75 designers and community members participated in an “Urban Hack” to generate possibilities for the greenway. The first node for development is the Central Park Station, where design work is currently underway to re-imagine possibilities for an existing adjacent basketball court.
