Crotched Mountain

Enjoyment of the outdoors is not just for some; it’s for all. And the Crotched Mountain Foundation in Greenfield, New Hampshire, is a perfect example of that truth.

The foundation has created a unique school and rehabilitation hospital in Greenfield, New Hampshire, to assist children and adults with disabilities. The 1,400-acre campus includes 2.5 miles of wheelchair-accessible trails—open to the public as well as campus residents. The trails provide access to a scenic vista of 2,000-foot-high Crotched Mountain and a wildlife viewing area surrounded by wetlands. The specially designed hardpack pathways, boardwalks, moderate grades, switchbacks, and rest stops create a natural, yet accessible, experience for people of all abilities.

To protect this unique resource, Trust for Public Land helped develop a conservation easement agreement with the State of New Hampshire. The easement created additional funding for the foundation’s charitable mission of serving people with disabilities while fostering forest stewardship and habitat protection.
