Homer Spit

In the heart of the business district of Homer sat the largest parcel of undeveloped land in town, the Beluga Slough. Just a short distance away was 68 acres of land on the Homer Spit. As tidal mudflats and basins, these pieces of land provide important habitat to migrating shorebirds who travel in each year from as far away as the Caribbean and Central America. In 1986, working in partnership with the Kachemak Heritage Land Trust and in cooperation with the City of Homer, TPL helped secure Exxon Valdez Oil Spill mitigation funds as well as city funds to preserve these well-known areas for both residents and visitors to Kachemak Bay.
