Honuʻapo Ranch Lands

Honu‘apo Ranch Lands are located mauka of Honu‘apo fishpond. Family owned and operated by three generations of the Galimba family, Kuahiwi Ranch produces free-range grass-fed beef for local consumption. The Ranch turned to The Trust for Public Land for assistance to restrict future land use to agricultural purposes, and in September 2021 we worked with them to place a conservation easement over Honu‘apo Ranchlands. Local nonprofits Ala Kahakai Trail Association and Ka ‘Ohana O Honu‘apo co-hold the conservation easement and will monitor it in perpetuity.

Honuʻapo Ranch Lands consists of approximately 601 acres of pasture land with important Native Hawaiian cultural sites and burial complexes. These higher elevation lands receive sufficient rainfall and are ideal for sustainable cattle grazing. Protecting Honu‘apo Ranch Lands with a conservation easement will conserve precious agricultural land, protect cultural sites, support jobs in this rural community, enhance our state’s food security, diversify our economy, and improve Hawai‘i’s resiliency.
