La Selva Uplands

As a hidden gem along the scenic coast of Santa Cruz County, the seaside landscapes of Rio Del Mar and Aptos offer visitors a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The soft, golden sands of popular beaches stretch out invitingly, perfect for leisurely strolls, swimming in Monterey Bay, or lounging in the sun. Lush greenery provides an idyllic backdrop for promises of a day spent basking in natural beauty.

While this sanctuary is enjoyed by thousands of people every year, it’s also under threat of development of secondary beach houses and large coastal mansions for affluent owners looking to monopolize these benefits. That’s why Trust for Public Land partnered with Amah Mutsun Land Trust, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife to protect 144 acres within a half mile of Seascape Park.

Historically a cattle ranch and held by the same family for over 100 years, this property hosts an array of ecosystems, including valuable upland habitat for the critically endangered Santa Cruz long-toed salamander. It also includes over a mile of streams, native scrubs, and critical prairie landscapes that help the state meet its 30×30 goals. Its prime location within a groundwater recharge zone also adds to its ecological significance.

This space is easily accessed off Highway 1 with developed trails already in place, making it well-suited to be an outdoor classroom for students from the Pajaro Valley Unified School District and local universities. When spaces like these are accessible to everyone, we can allow Mother Nature to educate the next generation of conservationists about nature-based climate solutions, the importance of watersheds, and the protection of endangered species, inspiring a commitment to preserving our planet for the future.
