Lewis Heritage Farm

Colorado has a rich agricultural heritage. As one of top agricultural states in the U.S., It has over 38,900 farms and ranches across 32 million privately owned acres—and one incredibly special farm is the Lewis Heritage Farm. As agricultural land has steadily declined over the past 20 years, preserving working farms like this is critical to preserving Coloradoan’s livelihood and connection to the land they love.

Lewis Heritage Farm spans across 226-acres with prime agricultural soil, valuable water rights, and over a half mile of access to the Little Thompson River. Sitting a mile away from the growing town of Berthoud and a 50-minute drive North from Denver, this property has the potential to benefit many local residents, and the Lewis family was waiting for the right time to permanently safeguard their land for future generations.

Trust for Public Land helped secure a conservation easement on the Lewis Heritage Farm, which means the property will remain a working farm, while also allowing public access and protecting the riverfront. Community partners will include a living classroom on the property so local children can learn about the agriculture industry and become the next generation of farmers and ranchers. This conservation easement will also allow a planned three-mile future trail, including a small parking area, which would be the first step in Larimer County’s regional trail system. This trail system will allow residents and other communities around Berthoud to enjoy a pedestrian and bicycle route to the Lewis Heritage Farm and connect to the beautiful landscape around them.
