Mifflin Square Park

In the heart of South Philadelphia’s vibrant and diverse community, Mifflin Square Park has been a central gathering place since the 1800s. While originally designed to meet the recreational activities of the time, the park has struggled in recent decades to keep up with the evolving and growing needs of its surrounding neighborhood. Today, Mifflin Square serves as an essential space for nearly 13,400 residents within a 10-minute walk—a place where generations come together to play, relax, and celebrate.

The local community has been deeply invested in the vision of a renewed Mifflin Square Park, passionately advocating for the updates needed to make the park a true reflection of its neighborhood. Unlike some of Center City’s more well-funded parks, Mifflin Square Park has long lacked the resources to give the neighborhood amenities like a quality playground, gathering space, and new trees for shade. Recognizing the community’s strong desire for a modernized, inclusive park, Trust for Public Land joined forces with SEAMAAC (Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition) to help secure vital funding and project support to bring the community’s park dreams to life. In collaboration with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and local leaders, this park has been reimagined to reflect the unique character of the neighborhood.

In 2024, we helped bring vibrant new life to this cherished space. The transformation included two imaginative playgrounds designed for children of all ages, along with renovated pathways and a refreshed water spray pad that provides families with space to walk, play, and enjoy sunny days. Shaded seating areas and upgraded lighting enhance the park’s safety and usability, allowing kids to stay active and outdoors until the sun goes down.

At Trust for Public Land, we believe that parks are essential to building healthier, more connected, and resilient communities. Investments in green spaces are investments in the future, and thanks to the dedication of SEAMAAC, local leaders, and the residents of South Philadelphia, Mifflin Square Park will continue to be a place of joy and connection for generations to come.
