Moxie Pond

The Appalachian Trail is the backbone of the east, traversing 14 states along the Appalachian Mountains from Maine to Georgia. While this national trail’s footpath is protected, the land surrounding the trail is often at risk. That’s why Trust for Public Land has identified over 26,000 acres that must be protected to maintain and enhance the A.T. experience for millions of hikers, campers, and visitors who come to explore each year.

In 2020, we protected 2,620 acres at Bald Mountain Pond and now have turned our sights to an adjacent landscape—Moxie Pond. Moxie Pond encompasses over 1,845 acres of gorgeous forests and lakeshore that are popular for hiking, fishing, hunting, and enjoying its prominent ATV and snowmobile trail. Once protected under the stewardship of the National Park Service, this hiker’s paradise, including five miles of the Appalachian Trail’s viewshed, will be safeguarded from timber harvest and development along Moxie Pond’s shoreline will be prevented forever.

While critical to protect the integrity of the A.T., Moxie Pond is one of the missing puzzle pieces to create a more climate-resilient future for people and wildlife. These important landscapes allow for ecological adaptation to a changing climate and need to be protected for continued public recreation, wildlife habitat, and more connection to nature for Maine’s High Peaks visitors.
