Munising Community Forest

Nestled along Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the City of Munising is where nature and adventure meet. Locals love the remote, rural lifestyle, while tourists flock here for the stunning landscapes, outdoor activities, and rich history. With Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Grand Island National Recreation Area, miles of hiking trails, world-class trout fishing, hundreds of miles of snowmobile and ATV/UTV routes, Munising is the perfect gateway to the Northwoods and Lake Superior’s coastline.

But the landscape that makes this outdoor paradise so beloved is at risk. 376 acres overlooking Lake Superior’s Munising Bay are at risk of logging or development into residential or vacation properties, which is why Trust for Public Land is teaming up with the City of Munising to safeguard this land as a Community Forest.

What makes Community Forests so special are the community members actively voicing their vision for the property’s future. Once protected, this space will be locally managed with a focus on forest health, clean water, outdoor education, carbon sequestration, and boosting the recreation-based economy. It will also help reroute a key segment of the North Country Trail from dangerous roads into the forest.

By protecting this land, we’re helping residents safeguard their natural resources and create a future where the forest continues to benefit the people who live, work, and play here. The community is committed to owning and managing the land to meet its evolving needs, ensuring it remains a vital part of Munising’s identity for generations to come.
