Thurston Hills Natural Area
For years, the residents of Springfield urged the Willamalane Park and Recreation District to create a seamless system of hiking, biking and recreation areas in and around the outlying Thurston Hills. The Trust for Public Land’s Conservation Finance team helped put a bond on the town’s 2012 ballot to support the community’s parks and trails.
Approved by voters, the new conservation funding means people can hike, bike and explore land rich in wildlife from Thurston to Jasper-Natron. When complete, the effort will provide 660 acres of parkland, including an 80-acre community forest.
This project was made possible through the support of the Bonneville Power Administration, U.S. Forest Service, Oregon Department of Forestry, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
