U.P. Traverse

The North Country Trail is America’s longest national designated scenic trail, stretching from the rugged plains of North Dakota to the rolling hills of Vermont. It connects countless communities and offers endless recreational opportunities for visitors and millions of people who live near its footpath. Trust for Public Land is partnering with the National Park Service and the North Country Trail Association to protect one of the most treasured sections of the trail—the remote and breathtaking U.P. Traverse in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The U.P. Traverse invites hikers to disconnect from the pressures of daily life and immerse themselves in the vast northern forests along the shores of Lake Superior. While parts of the trail are protected within the Ottawa National Forest and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, other sections cross privately owned lands. This means trail access could close at any minute, barred by gates and no trespassing signs.

Enter: Trust for Public Land. With help from our trail partners and the timberland owner, Trust for Public Land has identified 24 distinct sections of the trail in need of protection, which in total run more than 35 miles. Once preserved, these 10,100 acres will create an unbroken link between National Forests, National Lakeshores, and small trail towns like Marquette and McMillan, benefiting both people and wildlife.

This opportunity represents the largest conservation effort ever undertaken to protect a congressionally designated National Scenic Trail. By leveraging our expertise in trail conservation and collaborating with our national experts, we’re ensuring this natural wonder remains accessible and protected for all who seek adventure and solace in the outdoors for generations to come.
