Ute Mountain

For almost 30 years, local and national conservation groups have wanted to protect 14,000 acres at Ute Mountain, an extinct volcano in northern New Mexico. With seven miles of frontage on the Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River recreation corridor, the property was formerly known as Top o’ the World Farm for its spectacular, mountaintop views of the gorge and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Forage and breeding habitat on the land support elk, deer, antelope, eagles, and other birds and animals. Negotiated by TPL with support from the Taos Land Trust, the transaction received crucial support from the Senator Pete Domenici and the New Mexico Congressional delegation. This multi-phased acquisition was completed in April 2005.
