A statement from Guillermo Rodriguez, Trust for Public Land’s California Director, on the passing of California Senator Dianne Feinstein.

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein, a true champion for California’s environment. Sen. Dianne Feinstein shaped California’s environment like no one else.

As Mayor of San Francisco and formerly as a member of the Board of Supervisors, Senator Feinstein worked diligently to create vibrant urban parks and greenspaces, making the city more livable and sustainable. Her dedication to preserving open spaces and expanding access to nature for all was evident in her leadership in initiatives that strengthened our city parks and protected our cherished landscapes.

In the Senate, she was a pragmatic and remarkably effective driving force behind a host of conservation initiatives, including successful legislation to protect the pristine waters and fragile ecosystem of Lake Tahoe, the unparalleled resources of the California desert, the threatened wetlands of the San Francisco Bay, and equitable access to the natural treasures of the Santa Monica Mountains. A wide array of Trust for Public Land partnerships – from resolving the checkerboard of land ownership that had long impeded public access in the Sierra to creating the only connection in America between public-assisted housing and National Park lands – would simply not have happened without her inspired leadership.

Senator Feinstein’s vast environmental legacy is a testament to her enduring commitment to the natural world and her determination to leave a lasting impact on the places we hold dear. Her tireless advocacy for conservation and environmental protection earned her a place in the hearts of countless Californians and the respect of environmentalists across the nation.
