Brazos Cliffs

The iconic beauty of the Brazos Cliffs in New Mexico is undeniable. Dubbed the “Yosemite of New Mexico” and named one of the 14 places to visit before you die by the State of New Mexico, these cliffs offer unparalleled recreational opportunities such as hiking, hunting, and fishing. Just about an hour and a half from Sante Fe and 2.5 hours from Albuquerque, they’re conveniently located within an easy drive for over half of the state’s population.

But as these areas continue to boom with visitors and the development of second homes, Trust for Public Land is working to protect the spaces that bring us all outside before they’re lost forever.

We partnered with the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) Forestry Division to protect 6,780 acres along the Brazos Cliffs, including 8 miles along the Brazos River. As part of the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area, this space is a recreational gem. While dominated by mixed conifer and aspen spruce forests, it also contains hundreds of acres of riparian woodlands that are rare in New Mexico, making up less than one percent of the state. It’s also a critical habitat for 9 threatened and endangered species.

By preserving these landscapes, we ensure that scenic vistas, clean water, vital wildlife habitats, and our shared natural and cultural heritage endure for future generations.
