Trust for Public Land has been leading a nationwide movement to transform schoolyards into vibrant, green spaces that improve the daily lives of students, educators, and the surrounding community. Our Community Schoolyards® program is an effective solution to park access that promotes a healthy lifestyle and improves educational outcomes, while making vulnerable communities more resilient to the impacts of climate change. Now, it’s time to bring the benefits of these schoolyards to Florida.

Biscayne Beach Elementary in Miami Beach has long dreamed of providing a stimulating, green environment for its students; however, its current open space lacks the vibrancy and functionality needed to inspire play and imagination. But thanks to partnerships with the City of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, we’re creating a dynamic new space that meets the needs of both students and residents.

Together, we’re revamping their existing school field into a spectacular green space designed with both student and community member input through our participatory design process. Our Community Schoolyards projects can produce game-changing benefits like boosted test scores, reduced stress, enhanced creativity, and improved mental and physical health, just as we have achieved with other schools and communities.

Once complete, the redesigned schoolyard will spark play and fun with features like enhanced green areas, engaging play equipment, trees, and shade. This space will be open to the public after school hours, becoming an asset for families and benefiting over 10,400 residents within a 10-minute walk.
