Ever heard of the Antiquities Act? It may sound like something straight out of a Mummy sequel, but it’s actually the century-old law that grants the U.S. president the ability to declare national monuments—today, an eclectic collection of protected places that includes American icons from Mt. St. Helens to the Statue of Liberty. 

Now, there’s another monumental effort underway in California. The proposed Santa Cruz Redwoods National Monument would include portions of the Coast Dairies property, protected with help from The Trust for Public Land. The open bluffs, dense forests, and windy grasslands draw visitors from across the country to experience the beauty of the west coast. We think it more than qualifies as a national treasure. 

Locals agree. More than a thousand people turned up at a rally for monument designation last month, including former secretary of the interior Bruce Babbitt. “Half the town was there,” he told reporters. “It seemed to me an excellent statement of community support.”
