The Trust for Public Land Celebrates a Day on the Land at Astoria Hot Springs Park on September 16th

The Trust for Public Land invites residents of Teton County and surrounding communities to Day on the Land, a celebration of the return of Astoria Hot Springs Park on September 16th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The public event will feature tours of the future park, family activities, yoga, music, and more. Food vendors will be on hand – so bring your appetite.

The celebration celebrates the progress on the $5 million Campaign for Astoria Hot Springs Park to support the land protection, phase-one construction of the hot springs and facilities, completion of park design, and a stewardship fund for future park needs. The Trust for Public Land has secured gifts from people of varying capacities – a clear indication that no matter their means, families are committed to this wonderful project. “It is exciting to see the momentum building to bring back Astoria for our community after twenty years. Not only will the new park offer an accessible, affordable, welcoming place to soak in the hot springs, the park will return public access to a gathering place, central to the cultural fabric of Jackson Hole for generations,” says Paige Byron, Wyoming Associate Director of Philanthropy.

Located 15 miles south of Jackson, WY, along the Snake River, Astoria Hot Springs was a popular recreational site for 40 years before it was closed to the public in 1999. Now, The Trust for Public Land is working with residents to redesign and rebuild a new community park, centered around the mineral soaking pools. Ultimately, the 100-acre riverfront park will include hot soaking pools, a welcome center, trails, cultural gathering spaces, wildlife watching, fishing ponds and wetland enhancements.

This July, The Trust for Public Land received approval of their final development plans from the Teton County Board of Commissioners, after over two years of work to protect the property and redesign the new park. With DHM Design, The Trust for Public Land engaged over 2,000 locals in the design process, to ensure the new Astoria will reflect the needs and desires of local community members. Construction on the park will begin in 2018, once the Campaign for Astoria Hot Springs Park is successfully completed.

The new park will serve Teton County’s 29,000 full-time residents, neighboring communities such as Alpine, Bondurant, Pinedale, and visitors from around the world. By revitalizing Astoria, The Trust for Public Land is preserving the historic character of Jackson, enhancing equity through the creation of an accessible welcoming park, and improving sustainability through land and water conservation.
