Kinnikinnick Creek
In 2007, The Trust for Public Land purchased an 88-acre farm and a 2-acre access parcel in the Village of Roscoe from Northern Illinois Farms, LLC. TPL held the land until The Natural Land Institute (NLI) and the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District (WCFPD) secured the necessary funds to acquire it for restoration and preservation of the habitat. This land is part of a natural prairie and upland savanna that will serve to protect the high-quality Kinnikinnick Creek that bisects the property. It is located in the Village of Roscoe in Roscoe Township – north of Rockford along I-90. This land is part of a natural prairie and upland savanna that will serve to protect the high-quality Kinnikinnick Creek that bisects the property.
Funding sources: NLI received grants from Illinois’ Conservation 2000 Ecosystems Program and the Grand Victoria Foundation of Chicago. WCFPD received a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to help purchase the property.
