Hawksnest Bay, St. John
St. John resident Eleanor Gibney is dedicated to sharing her love of the land. A passionate naturalist and historian, she’s been working with The Trust for Public Land for more than a decade to conserve the pristine coastal environment at Hawsknest Bay. In 1999, we purchased Ms. Gibney’s 3-acre beachfront property in Hawksnest, transferring ownership to the National Park Service (NPS) for permanent protection. Eleven years on, Ms. Gibney donated two half-acre parcels adjacent to her original property. This land will be conveyed to NPS in 2012.
From white-sand beaches to dense native forest, Hawsknest Bay is an inspiring example of the picturesque island landscapes treasured by locals and visitors alike. The Trust for Public Land is working to safeguard these special places from development, protecting valuable natural resources, water quality, and the spectacular views that make St. John famous.
