Canthook and Steelhead Lakes

A slight breeze blows over the lake, causing the water to ripple as the gleam of the rising sun casts a beautiful reflection.

Birds chirp peacefully in the background, offering a nature-infused soundtrack as eager anglers set their sights on the perfect place to cast their line.

As they patiently wait for a panfish, largemouth bass, trout, or walleye to take the bait, anglers enjoy the stunning backdrop of the iconic Northwoods.

Thanks to conservation efforts, the public can continue to enjoy this high-caliber outdoor experience at Canthook Lake and Steelhead Lake in Wisconsin.

To protect these two glacial lakes, Trust for Public Land successfully acquired and conveyed the 609-acre wooded Canthook and Steelhead Lake properties.

Canthook Lake began as a Boy Scout camp, offering youngsters unforgettable summers filled with exploration of undeveloped land, education about the various plants and animals, bow hunting, and canoeing. The family that owned the land understood its treasures and decided to sell it to TPL. It is now managed by the U.S. Forest Service, so the beauty and adventure enjoyed by the scouts can be appreciated by the public.

The combined lake properties include 9,100 feet of undeveloped shorelines. The public lakes also offer adventure and opportunities for fishing and water sports for those traversing the North Country National Scenic Trail, an adjacent popular hiking trail that stretches across seven northern states for more than 4,000 miles. Thanks to TPL and its partners, the public can now enjoy the pristine character of these Northwoods lakes just a short distance from the trail.
