Military Bases and Conservation
Since 2004, The Trust for Public Land has partnered with the Department of Defense and communities to conserve land and relieve encroachment pressure on military installations, whether from incompatible development or loss of natural habitat.
Faced with increasing development around military installations, the Department of Defense established the Readiness and Environmental Initiative (REPI). Under this program, the department can enter into agreements with private conservation organizations like TPL to acquire real estate in the vicinity of military installations such as bases, posts, and forts.
