Yarr Farm
The Chimacum Valley in Jefferson County is experiencing a resurgence of agricultural production and is quickly becoming a hub of community-based food production in Washington State. At the same time, rapid development in this fertile valley is making it difficult for young farmers to buy land.
The Trust for Public Land, in partnership with Jefferson Land Trust, Jefferson County, and the US Navy, is working to mitigate the threat of development on agricultural lands in Chimacum Valley.
Yarr Farm, a historic 154-acre farm owned by a timber company, was slated to be developed into a cluster of ranchettes. In 2017 The Trust for Public Land and our partners permanently protected Yarr Farm by purchasing its development rights, thereby making it affordable for an aspiring young farmer. We have since worked closely with Jefferson Land Trust to identify a farmer for this land and happily sold it to them for an affordable price. This fertile piece of farmland will now return to productivity.
