Los Angeles, CA Trust for Public Land Vice President of the Pacific Region and California State Director Guillermo Rodriguez released the following statement after the Los Angeles Unified School District unanimously approved a $9-billion school construction bond, including a $1.25 billion allocation for green schoolyards, to be put before Los Angeles County voters in November:

“Extreme heat is negatively impacting the mental and physical health of our children, and in turn their educational growth. That is why Trust for Public Land applauds LAUSD Board’s unanimous approval to place a $9 billion bond measure before the voters in November, including a $1.25 billion allocation for green schoolyards.

LAUSD is leading by example by including guaranteed funding for green schoolyards including significant funding for green schoolyards will only help attract more voters to support passage of this critical bond. Kids deserve safe spaces where they can learn and thrive. Transforming heat-amplifying, asphalt schoolyards into cooling green schoolyards enhances student performance and creates healthier learning environments. Green schoolyards are not just a nice-to-have; they are critical for the well-being of our students and communities in Los Angeles and across California.”
