Chopmist Hill Land Will Be Protected
Scituate, RI, 12/4/01: Last spring, at the request of the Scituate Town Council, the Trust for Public Land entered into an agreement to purchase the Chopmist Hill Inn property for $280,000. The Chompist Hill property consists of an inn building, originally constructed in 1815 and enlarged and rehabilitated over the years into a 9,000-square-foot structure, and 40 acres of open fields, woodlands, and wetlands. In the 1800’s, the Inn served as a popular stop for stagecoaches traveling between Hartford and Providence, and accommodated hundreds of guests for clambakes, banquets, and other parties. Scituate residents voted last April to acquire the property, and TPL purchased the property last June.
The land will be transferred to the town by the end of February 2002. Using state grant money and local funds, the Town of Scituate hopes to restore the existing building into a Youth/Senior Community Center, while the 40 acres of open land surrounding the Inn will be used for Little League or other recreation. A network of trails will be created throughout the forested portion of the property.
