Sheep Ranch

More than just a lake, the Sheep Ranch addition to the Paul Bunyan State Forest encompasses over 2,500 acres of serene forests, pristine ponds and streams, and precious habitat for native plants and wildlife. In all, this property is one of the largest remaining blocks of private forest in the entire state. This makes it extremely attractive not only for residents around Hubbard County to enjoy expanded recreational opportunities—an especially great need near the ever-popular Itasca State Park—but also for developers looking to build second homes or parcel the land out for private ownership.

Sheep Ranch is surrounded by other public forestland, including another TPL project Hubbard County Deep Lake Park. If sold to development, the area could be checkerboarded with private “keep out” signs that limit a visitor’s ability to enjoy this stunning landscape. That’s why Trust for Public Land worked with partners like The Conservation Fund to helped protect these acres with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Forestry (DNR) as the property’s permanent steward.

Protecting large parcels like this means more people will be able to explore the beauty of Minnesota and connect to the benefits of nature. It protects the water quality in lakes and streams, and safeguards habitat for threatened and endangered wildlife found in the area. Additionally, the property is composed of productive timberlands, and if sustainably managed, could contribute to local jobs and boost the local economy. As part of TPL’s Mississippi Headwaters Program, this Sheep Ranch addition supports the health of the fourth largest river in the world and the 18 million people who depend on this watershed for water supply.

Whether hiking through the magnificent woods and connecting to the North Country National Scenic Trail, fishing from a gorgeous lake, or hunting deer and grouse, Sheep Ranch will now be able to be enjoyed by all.
